As a full-service veterinary hospital, we incorporate the latest in pain management protocols into every surgical case. Our goal is to keep your pet comfortable both before and after their procedure. Our licensed veterinary technicians and assistants work alongside our doctors throughout every surgery to ensure the highest standard of monitoring and care.
Prior to any procedure, we recommend pre-anesthetic bloodwork through our in-house diagnostics laboratory to evaluate your pet’s organ function and confirm they’re fit for anesthesia. This step is especially important for older pets or those with underlying health conditions.
Our veterinarians perform surgeries on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
For advanced or specialized procedures, we also partner with Dr. Kari Swanson, a Board Certified Small Animal Surgeon, through our mobile surgery program — bringing specialty-level surgical care directly to our clinic.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pet Surgery
How do I know if my pet needs surgery?
Your veterinarian will recommend surgery when it is the safest or most effective treatment for your pet’s condition. This may follow a physical exam, bloodwork, or imaging through our diagnostic services. If surgery is recommended, our team will walk you through all your options, what the procedure involves, and what recovery looks like — so you can make a fully informed decision.
What should I do to prepare my pet for surgery?
In most cases, your pet will need to fast (no food) starting the night before their procedure. Our team will give you specific pre-operative instructions when you schedule the surgery, including any adjustments to medications. Pre-anesthetic bloodwork is also strongly recommended and can be done at a pre-surgical appointment.
Will my pet be in pain after surgery?
Keeping your pet comfortable after surgery is a top priority at Deer Park Veterinary Hospital. We incorporate modern pain management medications — including NSAIDs like carprofen or meloxicam — into our post-operative care plans, and your pet will go home with a supply of pain medication and detailed aftercare instructions.
How long will my pet’s surgery recovery take?
Recovery time varies depending on the type and complexity of the procedure. Routine soft tissue surgeries like spays and neuters typically have a recovery period of 10–14 days. More complex procedures may require longer rest and follow-up visits. Our team will provide a full recovery plan and is available to answer questions throughout the healing process.
What monitoring is done during my pet’s surgery?
All surgical patients at DPVH are closely monitored by our licensed veterinary technicians throughout the procedure. Monitoring includes heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and body temperature. We use both Doppler and PetMAP blood pressure equipment for precise cardiovascular monitoring — the same tools described on our diagnostics page.
Do you offer advanced or specialty surgical procedures?
Yes. Through our mobile surgery partnership with Dr. Kari Swanson, DACVS-SA, we offer advanced orthopedic and soft tissue procedures including TPLO, patellar luxation repair, fracture repair, and more — all performed right here at our clinic. Dr. Swanson’s services are referral-based and coordinated through our team.
What days does DPVH perform surgeries?
Our veterinarians perform surgeries on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. To schedule a surgical procedure or pre-surgical consultation, call us at (513) 791-8550 or request an appointment online.
